I've been making home espresso for 25 years and have used many different machines of various prices which all died.I bought one for $250 from Starbucks which died in one year.They told me parts were not available.This machine is practically bullet-proof.I've had it for over 5 years and it is still running like new.Sure it hurts to spend this much on an espresso machine, but how many $250 machines will you go through?Learn from my mistake(s) and get a good one.
All the parts inside are commercial or semi-commercial grade.Anyone who works on commercial espresso machines can work on this one, and the parts are readily available. It's all stainless and cast iron.Very nice.
It has a 3-way solenoid, which you want, trust me.The 3-way solenoid lets pressure escape from the basket when you switch off the pump so that the coffee grounds fall out of the portafilter handle in a solid little disk instead of a soupy mess.
You DO NEED a good grinder made for espresso to use this machine.The pump puts out a solid 9 bar, which means most grinders can't get the coffee fine enough.A burr grinder is the only way to go.This makes the grounds fine enough that a shot will take about 20 seconds to make.Any less time for a shot and it means your coffee is too coarse.If you don't want to buy a grinder right now, there are some good preground espresso coffees in a can (such as Illy), but it will go stale fast.You'll want the grinder.
If you want great espresso, and a reliable machine, you can't go wrong with the Silvia.Take a bit of time to learn proper technique and you'll be happy with this one.

(More customer reviews)I received the Bialetti 1-Cup Electric Mukka Express Cappuccino Maker after a very disappointing experience with Krups latest item. Upon returning Krups for a full refund, I was pleasantly surprised by this small machine. What makes this machine so great is:
1-it is easy to use, just add water, espresso grounds, and milk (will even froth fat-free milk!)
2-plug in the base and push the button, then just go about your business as this little miracle brews and froths a tasty surprise for you (it takes 5-6 mintues)
3-easy to pour and wash. No small parts that will break or get lost and the parts seem to be VERY durable
4-the design is very handsome and easy to store on your counter top until next use since it is small thus not taking up much room

I would recommend this product to any casual coffee/cappuccino drinker who enjoys a tasty brew during the week and doesn't want to fork out money to trot to "4 Bucks"

Vev Vigano Itaca 4 cup Espresso maker is the slick , shiny , well made,durable little 18/10 stainless steel bombfor up to two people, with an espresso addiction

You'll have to polish your barista skills (grind and Tamp)...practice with and regular cleaning of the Itaca will be rewarded with crema and flavor ..lazyness will keep you in line at starbucks feeding a foam addiction...

Do the math ...I dropped forty five CA on the Itaca and inside ofseven days had consumed enough large lattes (twenty one of them) to require I take out a small loan to feed this same espresso addiction @ starbucks (I'm hooked on espresso, not foam, but if YOU need foam ..use an egg whip on your separately heated milk ...you wussies :)

REAL men only need apply to operate the Itaca..(it s all analog baby)
it gets hot and burns the fingers, it can spit out pure crap if the shot is not tamped and ground properly (imagine that)and if you overheat it, bitterness is the reward..plus you have to clean it after every use AND it takes just a weee bit longer than making a cup of instant...

It s worth it all... for the flavor..it s really really good ..it s really addictive ...I may have to sue ...and I dont miss and or need the foam on my latte ...

Arrrrrr ..Have you ever been to sea without an espresso machine Billy? ....

Krups 92011-42 Artese Espresso, Cappuccino, and Latte Maker Review

(More customer reviews)I finally got fed up with running out for lattes every morning and the steam-driven machine that I had just didn't make a good shot of espresso, so when I saw the Krups Artese, a pump driven machine, I decided to risk [money] and see how it worked.In my opinion, it works like a charm.It makes a great single or double shot of espresso with a healthy head of crema.The water tank is handy for producing shot after shot and the steamer actually gets the milk really hot and produces a nice froth.
Advice to users -- 1) Skip the auto cappuccino accessory (which is supposed to draw milk from a container and steam/froth it automatically).It's clumsy.The steam nozzle works fine.
2) Turn the steam on before you put the nozzle in the milk to let excess water drip out of the nozzle.Turn it off before you take it out of the milk to avoid knocking down the froth
3) If the water isn't going through the grounds, try another brand of coffee or a different grind.I returned one machine thinking that the pump was broken, I couldn't get the water to push through the grounds.But it was the coffee, not the machine.
I use a store brand of coffee (President's Choice Decaf Espresso from Jewel) and it makes a smooth tasting shot without any bitterness at all.For [the money], this machine is an excellent value.

(More customer reviews)the mashine lasted 1 month after the warranty expiration than the gasket broke. after various attempts to reach a customer rep he told me that as a 1 time courtesy he will send me one. i wanted to purchase a couple as a reserve but he told me they don't sell it and if it brakes again i'll just have to buy a new mashine, mind you this one was 13 months old. that gasket lasted exactly 6 months, now i'm getting me a delonghi, at least i can buy parts for it and they have great customer service and not an answering mashine that tells you to leave a message....well don't hold your breath cause they won't, no matter how many messages u leave. cem global is the company that deals with professional series appliances, they certainly lost me as a customer for any of their products since they can't stand behind it like any reputable company would.

(More customer reviews)While waiting impatiently for this item to arrive (it arrived in 3 days) I went looking for reviews (I know backwards process).I was a bit worried because many reviews on a different page complained of a stinky gasket and how it made the coffee smell and taste like rubber. I followed the instructions and rinsed the gasket and filter before use. Then brewed the 1st batch, which as the instructions mentioned should be thrown out. Then I brewed some water and vinegar, and finally just some water to rinse it.I know, a lot of work, but I have not had a problem with smell or taste.
Only complaint is that the first steam sometimes makes the lid jump up and splashes some of the espresso, just a few drops, around the stove burner.Also, you have to put it at the edge of the burner not in the middle, otherwise the handle gets too hot.

(More customer reviews)We had a bit smaller version of this for years and LOVED it!! This one looks prettier but it is harder to use. We always steamed milk right in our mug before but with this one it is almost impossible to do because it immediately foams over and makes a huge mess. It does not adjust to steam/froth so you just get froth! It drives me crazy! I would rather have the other Capresso that is a bit smaller but worked great. If you never steam milk I suppose the espresso part works fine. I don't like it :(

(More customer reviews)I did a LOT of research and finally settled on this one.I was not disappointed.One thing to say upfront is that it is a very good quality product and made in Italy (not made in China or India) and this is stainless which is important I gathered versus aluminum.

Coffee choice should be a finely ground espresso or dark roast - similar to one for a traditional espresso machine- and the quality of the output is top notch.

I would definitely recommend and have even ordered a second one to take to camp with me!

I used to go to Starbucks every morning, but I eventually decided to buy my own machine (Espressione Cafe Retro)and brew my own. I gravited to pods because they were so much easier and less messy than ground coffee. I buy the Sampler Packs from Podmerchant exclusively, but not because I am attempting through scientific research to find the "best" brand. There is no BEST brand. Sometimes I want something light and tangy, so I'll reach for an Attibassi Nicaragua. Maybe a rich, heavy blast after a big meal? Gotta be a Lucaffe Mr. Exclusive. Early afternoon is the perfect time for a Cafe Mako Napoletano. I like the variety, I like the colorful packaging, I like to be surprised and not know what's coming next! Espresso is a treat, a pure delight, something to be savored. Who wants to savor the same thing over and over? Give me variety, or give me death!

Breville Cafe Roma Espresso/ Cappuccino Maker ESP8XL Review

(More customer reviews)I've owned 4 machines over a period of 30 years, starting with an old(er)-fashion piston-pump Riviera, a now expensive classic (the kind with the big lever arm you pull down) that I had completely rebuilt twice until I retired it for a Briel Lido (cheap & plain but reliable).

I had high hopes for this unit. It looks elegant in style with a metal body & clean lines & seems to operate in a straightforward way. But in actual usage it verges on the nightmarish. A previous poster has already eloquently described 2 of the ESP8XL's biggest shortcomings: its spring-loaded filter holder & its redesigned foaming wand.

I always make multiple cups of espresso, be it for straight shots, cappucinos or lattes. Therefore I fill & use at least 2 filters every time I make espresso. I had even already purchased the extra filters from Breville before even trying the unit for the first time. Disappointment quickly turned to frustration then to anger when I discovered how difficult it was just to *fit* the filter full with grounds into the holder (force was more like it) so tight was the spring. After considerable struggling I managed to get it in & make a cup. But to remove the now-heated (& full of damp grounds) filter was a real nightmare. I wound up having to use a paring knife to pry the filter from the holder, holding it with a kitchen towel to keep from burning myself. What a mess!

I called customer support & explained my problem. The chap on the line, while friendly enough, never seemed to have used an espresso machine, to say nothing of this model, suggesting such things as taking hold of the (burning hot) filter rim at the 2 indentations (about 1/8") in the holder. When I pointed out that the image of the filter holder in the manual showed a latch release while mine had none, he said that Breville had discontinued that feature & replaced it with the spring, they just hadn't updated the manual. Great! What lunacy. What I wouldn't give for the ability to pop the filter using that latch. Sadists at work.

I received this unit as a gift several months ago so can not return it, but have solved the problem of the filter holder by prying off the spring. Now the filters go in & come out easily as they should.

I rarely use the Breville to make espresso, mostly just to foam milk for my wife who likes it in her coffee. I should add that the previous reviewer was also correct in his assessment of the foamer. It does need to be turned on initially to release stored up water in order to get well-pressured steam.

Next time back to a European espresso machine (preferably Italian-made)for me. No more falling for the blandishments of clever marketing.

Not only did the espresso taste absolutely dreadful (there were grounds consistently in the bottom of the cup), but the plastic handle started melting within one week of use, and by three weeks of use, the entire handle had completely melted off, causing a smelly mess for my stove. I knew this was going to be a cheap espresso maker, but there's a big difference between cheap and completely unusable.
