Rancilio ROCKY Rancilio Burr Grinder with Doser Review

Rancilio ROCKY Rancilio Burr Grinder with Doser
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I won't rate this product 5 stars because I don't believe it is a good value. At almost [...], this thing should be flawless, and its not. If my only criteria were grading the ground coffee it produces, it would be a 5 though. Let me say though that it does a fantastic job making espresso grounds.

The path I took before I purchased this grinder started with a Black Friday sale at Starbucks where I picked up a Sirena espresso machine for $315. I had been coveting this machine since I had been introduced to espresso a year earlier but couldn't stomach the [...]gut wrenching price for that machine. Box in hand, I headed home to make my first espresso.

Long story short, I spent a few days using my [...]blade grinder to grind the coffee and came to the conclusion that I couldn't get the grounds consistent, even or fine enough. So I spent some time reading the thread on c[...] about my machine and found that most people on there recommended the Rocky. I thought [...]for a coffee grinder was ridiculous (I typically use stronger language but....) so I shopped around and settled on the still expensive (seriously, we're grinding coffee here) but reasonable Breville BCG450XL Conical Burr Grinder. I liked the Breville as it was fast, quiet, clean, small and light. However, its finest setting ("Turkish") wasn't really all that fine. Even on the finest setting, I was pulling triple shots in 8-10 seconds (which is about 2 seconds longer than when not using any coffee!). At that rate the espresso is thin and there is no crema.

Not being the type to give up on anything, I did some more research on the coffee grinders out there and was disappointed to find there was nothing in the $100-200 price range that people had good things to say about. Thus the Rocky was my cheapest "sure thing". I bit the bullet and bought it. To my satisfaction, it arrived later that week.

From the first shot I knew I made the right choice; the coffee was thick and rich, with a frothy and yummy crema. It wasn't perfect, but damn, it was better than anything that had come out of the machine before that! It took a few more adjustments to the grind setting and tamping pressure to pull a 25-30 seconds shot, but I got there pretty quickly. The Rocky has the adjustability to grind so fine that it can completely choke the espresso machine. That's awesome! I've now got the grinder dialed in just perfectly for my beans. The shots pull consistently good with about 2-3mm of silky smooth crema every time.

Now for the bad...
1.)The doser - Inside the doser there is a 6 bladed sweeper that rotates when you pull the lever. However, the sweeper blades aren't quite long enough to reach the rim of the doser and thus don't sweep all of the grounds out. It leaves a substantial amount. I've learned to not use the doser lever anymore, but rather use a brush to sweep and move the doser blades around manually. That cleans it out very well.
(As a side note, I think that the doser is necessary to break up the clumps of ground coffee coming out of the machine.)
2.)The speed - 21 grams of coffee takes about 45 seconds to grind. The beans get stuck in the hopper too so I have to use my brush to sweep them! The Breville processed this much cofee in about 1/3 the time (granted it wasn't as fine, but still).
3.)The weight - At something like 17lbs, it's a beast. With as much coffee as the doser slops out, I need to move it frequently to clean the coffee grounds off the counter. On the flipside though, I am glad I got a lot of metal for my money though as I know this unit is sturdy enough to last a lifetime.
4.)Ergonomics - It's hard to get a grip on this thing to move it. I wish there were small handles on the side of it.
5.)Cleaning - Everything is screwed together and nothing snaps apart. It's sturdy, but it's a pain to clean because you have to get the screw gun out to disassemble it.

Overall I am happy with it as it makes delicious espresso. I would recommend it to anyone who is serious about good espresso.

Rancilio Silvia espresso, lattes, cappuccinos maker (silver) Review

Rancilio Silvia espresso, lattes, cappuccinos maker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This machine is the perfect blend of quality, durability, and ease of repair for a home machine under $500.It makes espresso that rivals any you can buy at a coffee house.
I've been making home espresso for 25 years and have used many different machines of various prices which all died.I bought one for $250 from Starbucks which died in one year. They told me parts were not available. This machine is practically bullet-proof.I've had it for over 5 years and it is still running like new.Sure it hurts to spend this much on an espresso machine, but how many $250 machines will you go through?Learn from my mistake(s) and get a good one.
All the parts inside are commercial or semi-commercial grade.Anyone who works on commercial espresso machines can work on this one, and the parts are readily available. It's all stainless and cast iron.Very nice.
It has a 3-way solenoid, which you want, trust me.The 3-way solenoid lets pressure escape from the basket when you switch off the pump so that the coffee grounds fall out of the portafilter handle in a solid little disk instead of a soupy mess.
You DO NEED a good grinder made for espresso to use this machine. The pump puts out a solid 9 bar, which means most grinders can't get the coffee fine enough.A burr grinder is the only way to go.This makes the grounds fine enough that a shot will take about 20 seconds to make.Any less time for a shot and it means your coffee is too coarse. If you don't want to buy a grinder right now, there are some good preground espresso coffees in a can (such as Illy), but it will go stale fast. You'll want the grinder.
If you want great espresso, and a reliable machine, you can't go wrong with the Silvia.Take a bit of time to learn proper technique and you'll be happy with this one.

I have owned Saeco espresso machines for more than five years. The machine has become part of my morning routine. An important maintenance task is Descaling the machine to keep the coffee fresh.Saeco 52400 Dezcal Descaler is the best product for the job.Amazon provided the marketplace to find the best deal on it.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Saeco 52400 Dezcal Descaler

Product Description:
Your espresso machine is a real pleaser as it makes rich, delicious coffee beverages. Keep your coffee tasting great by descaling it every few months. You will need to descale your machine every 3 to 6 months depending on the hardness of the water you are using in your machine. Even if you use filtered water you will need to descale your machine occasionally to remove traces of limescale from pipes, valves, and the boiler. If you are not already using filtered water then we would recommend that you do - even if you live in an area with soft water a water filter will still remove impurities and improve the taste. The harder the water is the more often you will need to descale your machine. Water test strips can be used to find out how hard the water is in your area. No matter how good your water filtration may be, you're still getting calcium in your boiler tank. While small amounts of calcium won't alter the flavor of your espresso too much, over time that small amount will grow into a large amount causing a very bitter flavor in your cup and eventually causing damage to your machine. Some machines actually cease operating if parts require descaling. The descaling procedure may vary depending on the type of machine and the descaling product being used.Specifically formulated to quickly and effectively descale the hot water tanks and components of coffee and espresso machinery. By removing mineral deposits which clog and impair brewing equipment, Dezcal allows machines to perform at optimal levels

Jura-Capresso 13299 Impressa Z6 Automatic Coffee and Espresso Center Review

Jura-Capresso 13299 Impressa Z6 Automatic Coffee and Espresso Center
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently purchased the new Z6 after seeing one at William's Sonoma around Christmas.I resisted the temptation to purchase until a friend of mine called and told me he found one under the Christmas tree!We both purchased the Capresso 1500 about 3 years ago and thought those were the "Cat's Meow".Now fast forward to 2007 and the Z6 is here as the super automatic on steroids.

After unpacking I sat down and watched the included DVD twice.Once with my wife and once alone as I set up the machine. After you get through the initial setup and programming the machine is very easy to operate and maintain.Making a coffee drink is as simple as pushing one of 8 drink buttons on the front panel. I like the idea of the thermal milk storage tank but it's recommended that you don't store milk in it after use.I find this a little inconvenient to have to pour the milk into another container. With my previous C1500 I just put the plastic milk jug in the refrigerator and used it the next day.

I bought this unit to replace my C1500 for two major reasons. The first was my C1500 struggled to make a really hot coffee drink.I found myself drinking the beverage too quickly to avoid it getting cold or putting it into the microwave to heat it back up.The Z6 makes a hotter beverage that is much improved but still could be a few degrees hotter in my opinion. The second reason I purchased the Z6 was to get a bigger cup under the spouts. The C1500 was limited in what size cup I could place under the spouts and the Z6 allows me to put virtually any reasonable sized cup under the spout.

The Z6 is a beautiful piece to look at sitting on your counter and will be the envy of many a guest. However it has a chrome finish which appears durable but I would caution you to take extra precautions not to scratch the finish as it would be permanent.I place a paper towel on the lower tray when using ceramic type mugs to avoid scratching.

Update on 05/26/2008

I would like to say that the Z6 has been performing flawlessly for the past year and a half.As long as you perform the routine maintenance the Z6 will provide many years of trouble-free performance.I've also been putting the thermal milk container in the refrigerator with milk in it with no issues.

The Milk Island is a fantastic compliment to the Gaggia Platinum machines. The machine already brews your espresso at the touch of a button, and now the milk island froths your milk just as easily. Pour your milk into the Milk Island, turn the steam knob to the Milk Island position, and watch as your fresh cold milk turns into hot, creamy, delicious froth for your cappuccino or latte. The milk is contained in the Milk Island so no milk enters the machine so it won't clog and it is easy to clean. It can be completely taken apart for rinsing in no time at all. It's completely hands off and so easy your kids can use it to heat their milk for their hot cocoa! For a nice creamy latte, swirl the milk in the milk island before pouring to mix the steamed and frothed milk. For a cappuccino hold back the frothed milk with a spoon to pour the hot steamed milk then remove the spoon and pour out the frothed milk topping.

I received the Bialetti 1-Cup Electric Mukka Express Cappuccino Maker after a very disappointing experience with Krups latest item. Upon returning Krups for a full refund, I was pleasantly surprised by this small machine. What makes this machine so great is:
1-it is easy to use, just add water, espresso grounds, and milk (will even froth fat-free milk!)
2-plug in the base and push the button, then just go about your business as this little miracle brews and froths a tasty surprise for you (it takes 5-6 mintues)
3-easy to pour and wash. No small parts that will break or get lost and the parts seem to be VERY durable
4-the design is very handsome and easy to store on your counter top until next use since it is small thus not taking up much room

I would recommend this product to any casual coffee/cappuccino drinker who enjoys a tasty brew during the week and doesn't want to fork out money to trot to "4 Bucks"

Jura-Capresso 13215 Impressa S9 Avantgarde Automatic Coffee Center Review

Jura-Capresso 13215 Impressa S9 Avantgarde Automatic Coffee Center
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For a little information about me, I'm not a connoisseur of coffee. I like sweet coffee's (Carmel lattes) and never drink my coffee black. I like a nice sweet coffee in the morning as something smooth in the morning to get the day started, and occasionally at night when it's cold and if we are just relaxing I like to have a nice warm something or other. My wife will drink her coffee black and with almost no sweetener, she's a cappuccino person.

We've gone to Starbucks on and off for years and recently a little coffee house opened up down the street. We have been going there every morning for the last month. We always get small coffees and at $6 a visit it was a shocker when we realized we had spent about $120 in a month on coffee... that's when we started looking around.

Luckily a friend of mine had gotten the Jura-Capresso Z5 last year and couldn't stop talking about it, so I started my search there. After a lot of research on the web, and seeing the $1k difference between this machine and the Z5 which essentially only adds the One-touch cappuccino we decided to go with this machine.

So far we've had the machine a few days and within the first few hours I was making sweet/frothy/creamy drinks that were on par with any coffee shop I had ever been to. It's really easy.

The pre-sets are pretty good if you aren't too picky, but I'm *really* picky about my coffee even though I'm not a fancy burista or anything. The S9 comes with the frothXpress attachment so if you are into just hitting buttons and drinking coffee with no effort, you can totally do that. But I use the default manual frothing attachment and like to froth my coffee a certain way and my wife likes it another way.

We also use the hot water spout to make tea at night sometimes.

I'll admit that looking at this for $2500 then looking at some of the other machines that *seem* to have the same attachments for $400 is hard to swallow. The real magic of this machine is a combination of all the automation (push a button, drink coffee) as well as the fine-tuned control over everything and lastly over how exactly the items are heated, pressed and filtered. If you are curious, search for the S9 review on CoffeeGeek, the guy knows more about coffee than an entire country. He reviewed this machine after having it for over a year and loaning it out to people and restaurants. He got into the detail of how much pressure is used to brew the coffee (apparently very important) and also how hot and how fast the milk is heated (which is important I guess as well so you don't kill the naturally sweet proteins in the milk)... it's a ton of detail but at the end of the entire thing he gave the S9 his rank of favorite super automatic and I agree.

If you go to Starbucks or a local coffee shop that is run by relatively normal/educated people and you are someone that doesn't mind spending some time or take pride in making a good drink, I don't think you would have any problem recreating that quality of drink with this machine, it's fantastically easy.

If you are lazy and just want drinks handed to you so you can drink them and have a fairly wide range of acceptable tastes for your coffee, you can probably just spend the $2500 at Starbucks and let someone else do it.

Overall the machine is fantastic. The finish is plated plastic which I thought was cheap feeling, but it looks fine because it's sort of brushed and not super shiney. That only bothered me for about 5mins, then I just forgot about it and drank the coffee.

Another thing I like is that the machine is really intelligent about keeping itself clean. It tells you when it needs to rinse and does it once or twice a day, keeping everything in tip top shape. It also monitors the levels of everything in the machine (grounds, beans, water, filter, etc.) and tells you exactly what to do on the screen. Also, I didn't mention this in much detail, but you can control and adjust the values of everything in the setup menu. How strong you want your coffee or espresso to be, how much water is in it, how much steam in the milk, the temperature, how finely ground the beans are, how hard your water is and just about everything else that can effect coffee.

The only cleanup after making coffee to speak of are the parts that touch the milk. For me that's just the wand that steams the milk. I just pop it off, rinse it and let it air dry for the next time. So that is something to consider if you think that you can just get this machine and push a button every morning and never need to think about it again. There are little things you need to do (like empty the grounds and the drip tray) every other day if you are making around 4-6 coffees a day. If it's just you or you are only making around 2 coffees a day, you can probably let it go 4-6 days between just rinsing it out, maybe 30 seconds worth of work.

So my take-away advice for anyone reading this is:
A) If you like coffee from anywhere (Starbucks, McDonalds, your house, etc.) this is totally overkill. Just stick to a normal brewing coffee maker and call it a day. This is like not being able to tell the difference between a Honda Civic and a Lexus GS400... if you can't tell the difference, then save all that money and get the Civic. Some people just can't tell.

B) If you like good coffee, and get frustrated when you get the same coffee every single morning from a store like Starbucks and some mornings it's good, and other mornings it's not and you are paying good money for it (like I was) and you feel cheated on the mornings it stinks, then you'll love this machine. It will give you the chance to perfect your cup of coffee and make it whenever you want with perfect accuracy. It's also handy to make simple things like hot chocolate and tea with, so it has more functions than just the espresso or cappuccino.

Remanufactured Jura-Capresso 13187 Impressa E8 Automatic Coffee and Espresso Center, Black Review

Remanufactured Jura-Capresso 13187 Impressa E8 Automatic Coffee and Espresso Center, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This compact attractive machine is an excellent choice for use at home or perhaps a small office environment. The E8 makes creating expresso drinks easy and mess-free. It provides full control over the size and strength of each cup or shot you make.

Pros of this machine:

- The machine and milk steamer both heat up quickly.

- The water and bean containers are large enough that they do not require constant filling.

- The machine is automatic. Press a button or two and the machine grinds beans, produces coffee, then discards used beans and self-cleans.

- There is an available addon which converts the E8 to a super-automatic. This attachment will store milk in a refrigerated container and then auto-froth milk for cappucinos etc.

- The machine can use both whole beans or pre-ground coffee.

- The cleaning cycles are easy to perform and overall the machine is not difficult to maintain.

- Most importantly, this machine makes an excellent cup of coffee or expresso drink. Other reviewers said "good as Starbucks," I say "better than Starbucks" if you use the right coffee beans. NOTE: The milk steaming wand that comes standard with this machine is all most people would need. It works well for creating a couple of lattes or cappucinos. The Dual Frother Plus might be worth buying if you do a lot of entertaining and need to make a lot of drinks in a hurry. Cons of this machine:

- After making coffee the machine disposes of used coffee grounds in small internal container. This container fills up fast and needs to be emptied often.

- The Clearyl water filters can be hard to find (but they are optional and only need to be changed every few months).

- Each time the machine cleans itself, water pours from the spouts and collects in a shallow tray. The tray fills up quickly and becomes a gross mess of coffee residue, water and even mold (if you don't clean it often enough). I recommend that you keep a plastic cup near the machine and use it capture the water as it comes out. If you prevent the water from collecting in the tray it makes keeping the machine clean much easier.

In summary, I have never once regretted buying this machine. I have had one for almost two years with no significant problems. My machine paid for itself in less that a year in what I saved not going to Starbucks and other cafes.

Product Description:
Combining dramatic aesthetics with advanced technology, this fully automatic coffee center brews superb espressos, cappuccinos, lattes, and long crema coffees. The machine features an 18-bar power pump with a 1450-watt stainless-steel-lined ThermoBlock heating system. The unit's integrated, professional, solid-steel conical burr grinder offers consistent and aroma-saving grinding with six fineness settings for any type of bean--from light to dark roasts. In addition, its separate funnel for pre-ground coffee allows for making decaf or flavored coffee drinks--great for entertaining. A two-step pre-infusion cycle moistens and conditions ground coffee for maximum flavor extraction with perfect crema topping. The unit's fast, easy-to-use Dual Frother Plus provides continuous steam output and offers two settings, one for latte (steaming milk) and one for cappuccino (steaming and frothing milk).
For added convenience, the espresso machine's programming functions are easy to use. Simply touch the 1-cup button once, twice, or three times for mild, regular, or strong coffee, and turn the rotary dial to select the cup size from 1 to 8 ounces. The 2-cup button always produces twice as much coffee. So, if the cup size is set to 7 ounces it will brew a total of 14 ounces. The unit's frother can be used to release hot water for Cafe Americano or a cup of tea, and its hot water function is programmable from 1 to 16 ounces. An eight-digit LED display dialog system gives short, simple instructions like "ready", "heating", "steam ready", "fill water", and "clean unit". Selecting from "continuous-on" or "auto-off" from one half-hour to nine hours in one-hour increments ensures the machine stays on as long as needed.
Other useful details include a 64-ounce removable water tank, an 8-ounce bean container, a height-adjustable coffee spout, a five-level water hardness selector, and an automatic hot-water rinse cycle that cleans and pre-heats all vital brewing parts. Moreover, its Clearyl water-care system removes chlorine, lead, aluminum, and copper for better tasting coffee, and an electronic water-level sensor makes sure the machine never operates without water. Accessories include a measuring scoop, Clearyl filter, water-hardness indicator strip, cleaning tablets, and a video with detailed tips on brewing, frothing methods, and cleaning. Designed in classic black matte with a silver metallic middle section, the espresso machine makes for a beautiful addition to any home or small office. The unit measures 11 by 13-3/5 by 17 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty for household use.

I loved this since my brother first bought it.I have tried many lower priced imitators, but non lived up to the Capresso C3000.Now, several years later, I have inhereted his coffee machine.I still love it. It is demanding, asking you to add water, empty grinds, or even add coffee. But seriously, it is a great machine that custom brews a great cup of coffee and the biggest problem I find is it makes it to easy to drink a lot of coffee. If you take care of it it will take care of your coffee needs.

Krups 92011-42 Artese Espresso, Cappuccino, and Latte Maker Review

Krups 92011-42 Artese Espresso, Cappuccino, and Latte Maker

I finally got fed up with running out for lattes every morning and the steam-driven machine that I had just didn't make a good shot of espresso, so when I saw the Krups Artese, a pump driven machine, I decided to risk [money] and see how it worked. In my opinion, it works like a charm. It makes a great single or double shot of espresso with a healthy head of crema. The water tank is handy for producing shot after shot and the steamer actually gets the milk really hot and produces a nice froth.
Advice to users -- 1) Skip the auto cappuccino accessory (which is supposed to draw milk from a container and steam/froth it automatically). It's clumsy. The steam nozzle works fine.
2) Turn the steam on before you put the nozzle in the milk to let excess water drip out of the nozzle.Turn it off before you take it out of the milk to avoid knocking down the froth
3) If the water isn't going through the grounds, try another brand of coffee or a different grind.I returned one machine thinking that the pump was broken, I couldn't get the water to push through the grounds. But it was the coffee, not the machine.
I use a store brand of coffee (President's Choice Decaf Espresso from Jewel) and it makes a smooth tasting shot without any bitterness at all.For [the money], this machine is an excellent value.

Professional Series Espresso Maker - PS77791 Review

Professional Series Espresso Maker - PS77791

the mashine lasted 1 month after the warranty expiration than the gasket broke. after various attempts to reach a customer rep he told me that as a 1 time courtesy he will send me one. i wanted to purchase a couple as a reserve but he told me they don't sell it and if it brakes again i'll just have to buy a new mashine, mind you this one was 13 months old. that gasket lasted exactly 6 months, now i'm getting me a delonghi, at least i can buy parts for it and they have great customer service and not an answering mashine that tells you to leave a message....well don't hold your breath cause they won't, no matter how many messages u leave. cem global is the company that deals with professional series appliances, they certainly lost me as a customer for any of their products since they can't stand behind it like any reputable company would.

I'm not a coffee snob by any means, but I do like to try different types of coffee and cappuccinos. This is my first espresso machine and took a chance purchasing it as the reviews weren't very good.I'll have to say that I am very impressed how well it works and does what it says it will do for the money. It even looks nice too.It leaves a nice crema and steams and froths at the same time.Picking the right beans and following the directions will give you a great cup of espresso.Worth the money.Comes with recipes too.I didn't rate it a five as this is my first espresso machine.
