Well the machine was good until the warranty ran out. It started leaking water a little at a time, then the water stopped flowing into my cup and just ran out from under the machine. I am pretty handy so I thought I would take the back off and see if it could be fixed.I found that the heating element that the water flows through has a small hole in it.No problem I will just order one and be done with it. NOT gonna happen. It appears that some genius at Delonghi made the decision not to let customers that spend over $1000 dollars on a $200 machine buy internal parts, of course they want to rape me on repair charges plus the shipping both ways. The repair takes all of maybe 15 minutes if I had the part.If anyone knows where I can order a heating element please let me know. I will NEVER buy another Delonghi product!!!

This preserves the rich aroma of the coffee, as well as a fresher taste. In the brewing process, pressure is used to force hot water quickly through the coffee grounds, extracting the maximum amount of flavor and aroma in less than 30 seconds, producing only smooth, rich espresso without a hint of bitterness from over-extraction. I received my coffee maker and loved it for almost a year, until it stopped dripping the coffee.I had followed all the directions for cleaning and servicing the machine.I called the Arabee company from whom I purchased it.

They promptly made arrangement for me to get it back to them, as it was still under warranty. They have now had it for over 4 months and I can't get a proper response from them.I have been told that it took 6 weeks in the queue to get to service, then they needed a part, which may or may not have had to come from Italy. Now they won't even return calls or answer when I call. The next step, I guess is a legal one to get a new coffee maker or some form of recovery.

Loved the coffee maker while I had it.

This is the first espresso machine I have owned, so I won't be comparing it to other machines.I've had the machine for about 5-6 months now, using it once or twice nearly every day with no problems.

I have been drinking espresso for a long time and I appreciate a well-balanced, properly extracted, silky crema and rich cup of gold. This machine is quick and consistent with every cup. With the touch of a button, you can go from bean to drinking within seconds.I prefer heavy thick espresso, so I keep it at it's finest setting for a powerful cup. There are two methods to set the potency: one to adjust the coarseness of the grind and one to adjust how much to brew in each cup.You can use pre-ground as well, however, I have not tried it.

The steamer works fantastically and takes mere seconds to warm up.The design makes a great foam on top for a perfect cappuccino or latte.

It's easy to keep clean and it is very easy to set up right out of the box.The brushed finish leaves no fingerprints and the steam wand wipes clean with a damp rag very easily.

The machine is built sturdy and is very low profile, which is great for smaller kitchens lacking counter-space.You can adjust the height of the spout for different sized cups. The full operation (grinding, tamping, brewing, and disposing) is not loud at all compared to some machines I have heard.

Since the machine is relatively small in size, it does not hold a massive quantity of beans, the water tank does have to be filled often (but it is very easy to fill), and the waste bucket needs to be emptied after 4-5 uses (easy to dump).

I have nothing bad to say about the design, operation, interfacing, or maintenance of this machine.I highly recommend it to anyone and wouldn't return it for anything. It truly is the best part of waking up!

--Salud!

Pasquini Livia 90 Automatic Espresso Machine Review

Pasquini Livia 90 Automatic Espresso Machine

Recently my La Pavoni broke down after 3 years, so I had to look for another machine. My machine of choice for espresso has always been Cimballi, but I was not impressed with any of their machines, which did not require a water line. After some searching and recommendation from a friend I happened upon the Pasquini Livia 90.

As far as espresso machines go, the Pasquini Livia 90 is the best unit that does not require a water line. The water resevoir holds a very large amount of water and the espresso made with this machine is simply amazing.

A good espresso should have a thick layer of creme on top (goldish brown in color) which will hold the sugar poured in to the coffee afloat for a few seconds. The Pasquini Livia 90 was the first machine I've owned to accomplish the feat.I've owned a $700 Krups Fully Automated Machine, used a $3,000 Fully Automated Machine and owned the La Pavoni fully manual machine. However, the Pasquini was the only machine to provide the perfect creme.

The steam produced by the machine will froth milk for any of the popular espresso drinks and the ability to draw hot water from the unit is also a nice touch.Unlike some machines you can leave the unit on for long periods of time without having to worry about burning out the machine.

Best machine in its class.

I have (now you can say had!!) the Saeco Primea Touch Plus.I mainly make cappucinos. With the Primea, I had issues with the milk temperature (too cold) and no milk foam. Also, the cleanup was a pain.
I decided to try the Xelsis and I am glad that I did.So far I have had the machine for about two weeks and it is a winner. The milk comes out hot and the foam is perfect (looks like micro-foam done by a wand). It is easy to maintain and has worked flawless. The only negative is that the drip tray is kind of small but is it very quick and easy to empty. If you are looking for a quick and easy cappucino this machine is for you.

I have to say I was skeptical about buying a super automatic machine and especially this one since it was one of the cheapest models. I bought this for my mom and it had to be as easy as possible to use for her. I love it and I found out that the inside machinery is basically the same as the models that cost 2-3 times more. I have been using it for 3 months now and have not had any problems at all it just takes a little bit of learning and trial and error don't forget to read the manual there are many little things that you should know so the machine will work properly without problems. It really only takes about 1 minute for the machine to be ready in the morning from a cold start to make an espresso or boiling water for tea. The only thing that takes some time is to get the grind size and amount of coffee correct for the type of bean you have. You wouldn't think so but Dunkin Donuts whole orig beans work great and taste amazing for espresso I even talked to Saeco customer support and they said it was a great bean for it since it wasn't too oily. Dont think Twice about buying this machine it is amazing and will pay for itself in a couple months of not going to the coffee shop. I even like the fact that this machine isn't complicated it is very simple to use. If you end up buying one of these try to get the solid black model since it isn't painted it is solid black plastic so there is nothing to chip and when the coffee or milk splashes you don't see the spots so it looks clean all the time unlike the silver models. Some people complain about the water and coffee capacity but unless you put this in an office you will be fine the water makes about 12-15 shots and coffee makes about 30 shots so you should be fine for a normal household. I also noticed that if you use bottled water you will have hardly any problems with the machine since most problems arise from calcium buildup from hard water and not to mention bottled water tastes so much better. I hardly ever write in depth reviews it's just that I am so happy with this machine and it saves so much money. We are a family of 3 and we used to get 3 Coffee's lattes etc. every day costing about $12-$15 daily and we had a instant boiling water dispenser in our kitchen sink that from what I found out costs about $30 a month to keep going since it is always on and now we turned that off and just use this machine for the boiling water for tea, cup a noodles, etc. as well.

Its Opti-Dose adjustable doser allows for adjusting the fineness of the grinds, the amount of coffee brewed, and the amount of ground coffee used to make each individual cup, from 6 to 9 grams. In addition, the espresso machine's Rapid Steam function means no waiting between frothing milk and brewing espresso, and its steam and hot-water wand comes with an exclusive pannarello frother to make frothing milk simple. The steam wand's swivel joint adjusts to accommodate either a 12-ounce or 20-ounce frothing pitcher. With a light push, the machine will rotate on its swivel base, simplifying general maintenance and the cleaning and refilling of the 57-ounce removable water tank. Other highlights include a removable brew group for chemical-free cleaning; a removable drip tray and dreg drawer; and a removable dump box for used grounds (holds up to 15 pucks). Made in Italy, the 1,250-watt super-automatic espresso machine measures 12-1/2 by 14 by 15-3/4 inches and carries a one-year parts-and-labor warranty.
From the Manufacturer
With state-of-the-art technology, you can make all of your favorite espresso-based drinks, including cappuccinos, lattes, and even regular-strength coffee. The hot-water nozzle also dispenses hot water for tea or soup. Every cup of coffee is freshly ground, dosed, tamped, and brewed with consistent high quality in one cycle, all at the push of a button.
A Host of Helpful Elements
With a simple turn of the Spidem Villa's steam knob, you can you can use the steam wand and pannarello frothing device to froth milk easily for cappuccinos and lattes. The machine's conical burr grinder grinds the coffee before each dose is dispensed and can be adjusted to change the coarseness of the grind, allowing you to control the coffee's strength. The Spidem Villa also includes a brew button for brewing single and double shots. To change the strength of the coffee, the volume-adjustment knob can be turned to the right (less coffee) or to the left (more coffee) to regulate the amount of water used. You can even change the amount of coffee beans used for each beverage, from 6 to 9 grams, with the Opti-Dose adjustable doser. By adjusting the amount of coffee, you can adjust the strength, from weak to strong, without changing the amount of water used. A pre-brewing cycle injects a small amount of hot water into the freshly ground coffee to maximize the flavor extraction. The Saeco Easy Clean System consists of the new, patented brew group, the heart of the machine, which can be completely removed at the push of a button for convenient rinsing and chemical-free cleaning, and the water tank, dump box, and drip tray are easily removable for refilling and cleaning. Additional features include an adjustable/removable dual-spout dispensing head and a swivel base. Features and Specifications

Hot-Water Nozzle: Dispenses steaming water for tea, hot chocolate, and instant soups.
Pannarello Frothing Device: This makes getting that soft, velvety foam for a cappuccino fast and easy. Completely removable for easy rinsing, it offers flexibility and convenience when frothing milk.
Adjustable Conical Burr Grinder: The machine's conical burr grinder can be adjusted to several different grind settings, from fine to coarse. The burr grinders crush the beans between a moving grinding wheel and a non-moving surface, which creates a finer and more consistent grind than blade grinders. When water filters through fine grinds, it extracts the flavor more evenly for a perfect, robust cup of coffee.
Patented Removable Brew Group: The removable brew group is the heart of every one of Saeco's fully automatic machines. Thanks to this patented technology, all it takes is the push of a button, and Saeco's machines grind fresh whole beans, dose the grounds, brew the espresso, and discard the used grounds, all in one automatic cycle. The brew group can be easily removed for simple rinsing with tap water.
Volume-Adjustment Knob: Turn to the right (less coffee) or to the left (more coffee) to regulate the amount of water used.
Opti-Dose: Allows you to adjust the amount of coffee ground from 6 grams to 9 grams of ground beans per brewing cycle.
Saeco Aroma System: To optimize the coffee-drinking experience, a special programmed step injects a small amount of hot water into the freshly ground coffee to start a pre-brewing process. This is done just before the actual brew cycle commences in order to extract the best elements from the coffee grounds.
Dual-Spout Dispensing Head: With the dual-spout dispensing head, the espresso is divided evenly, so you can brew two cups simultaneously.
Adjustable and Removable Dispensing Head: Allows for several different sized cups and mugs to be used.
Swivel Base: The swivel base provides convenient rotation and makes operating and maintaining the machine more accessible and practical.
Easy Clean System: Lets the new, patented brew group, the heart of the machine, be completely removed at the push of a button for convenient rinsing and chemical-free cleaning.

Saeco Incanto Classic Super-Automatic Espresso Machine Stainless Steel - Saeco A-IC-SS
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I read reviews of multiple automatic expresso machines (deLonghi, Saeco, Gaggia, etc) and was concerned that most brands tend to have some negative reviews of their selected expresso machine breaking down after some time. Since there was no single review that reports on the reliability of these machines, I decided to take my chance with this expresso machine.

The manual of this expresso maker lacks sufficient instructions. Mine came with the new series Intenza water filter. The instruction, with the new water filter, instructs that the existing small white filter needs to be removed and does not provide instructions on its removal. It is only upon calling Saeco customer service that I understood how the small white filter can be removed. And when necessary, I sometimes called Seattle Coffee Gear, whom I originally bought mine from, who has excellent product expertise and customer service.

Most automatic expresso machines come with plastic parts from in to out. So this machine stands out in that the main body is still made from steel.

This product comes with an inbuilt grinder, with small to coarse grinder settings, and thus making it super-handy (fully automatic!).

I used this machine to brew some Blue Mountain coffee. It came out so rich in aroma and taste. Previously I was using some traditional filter to brew this coffee and was not able to discern the aroma and taste of this Blue Mountain coffee.

And the frother is able to froth the milk with a consistent quality as well. And it comes with the option of hot water as well.

I bought this during Jan 2010, so I can't comment on the reliability as yet. So far I cleaned this up after each use. In case, this machine starts breaking down, I will update my review so that future buyers can be fore-warned.1.5 mths later:
Upon power on, the 2 top & 1 bottom leftmost LEDs started flashing. I referred to the manual and it indicated loading and to wait. After waiting 10 mins and resetting the machine, I still observed the same phenomenon. After some tests, I found that it needed priming. So far this has happened twice in the last 2 weeks and priming solves the problem. Saeco USA needs to improve on their manual instructions !!!

Actually I have this machine. I wrote this below review for older model.I got this machine from ebay because for lower price was available there.

So I have used it already for one month. The espresso is coming out a fabulous, I think better, then Starbucks, even I have used Starbucks beans. I have tried three types of beans (Lavazza, Starbucks, Costco Hawaiian (yellow package) brand), so the best taste and creamy was from Costco Hawaiian brand. Lavazza in other hand was creamy but is not strong enough.

The cleaning is easy and fast. The frothing pitcher is produced good milk for cappuccino. I don't have any problems with this machine.

I have also noticed that me and my family is started consuming more coffee. I last time I have bought Starbucks coffee was just a day before I got this fabulous machine.

Also I will to suggest a follow the user manual and if you don't now something called to CS Saeco[...]

Because remembering, its European product, so it's like a German car- amazing to drive but easy to break, if you're not followed to user manual.

I gave four stars is only because the trash container need to be emptied too often, even the last one was not full and water container I wish will be bigger.

DeLonghi ESAM6700 Gran Dama Avant Touch-Screen Super-Automatic Espresso Machine Review

DeLonghi ESAM6700 Gran Dama Avant Touch-Screen Super-Automatic Espresso Machine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been looking for the perfect automatic coffee/espresso machine for a long time.I have been to the big coffee websites.I've read all the reviews. And finally, with some trepidation, I laid down half my children's inheritance to purchase this DeLonghi Gran Dama machine, based on the couple of reviews that I found that placed it in a positive light.

Was it worth it? Is it right for you? Well, read on and learn everything there is to know about it from a guy who has put this machine through its paces for two months.

The Pros:

- Automatic burr grinder built in that grinds from a pre-filled bean reservoir. This is very convenient and it makes a fresh and fragrant cup of stuff.

- Good temperature on the coffee, and it gets to that temperature very quickly.Never overly hot.Never tepid.Just right.

- The unit is surprisingly small and compact considering all that it is capable of.It fits perfectly into the slot that my old Capresso coffee pot occupied -- a machine that only made coffee, nothing else.

- Does it make a good cup 'o joe? Answer:Yes.It makes just as good a cup of regular coffee as what I get from the Peets store down the street. And this is what I was ultimately looking for.For the coffee alone, it is great.Far better than any machine I have ever owned previously (I have owned, I think, five machines from three manufacturers, at this point).

The Cons:

- Not really a very big deal, but the machine is pretty loud.It buzzes really, really abrasively when it is heating and grinding.I had seen this issue mentioned in other reviews, so I was prepared. But you should know that it is LOUD.

- The machine is not well designed. It is very difficult to get into in order to empty the grounds, fill the water tank and to clean. You have to really go through quite a bit of shenanigans to get inside. To dump the grounds, you have to removethe drip tray (which doesn't just slide out simply as one would expect, you kind of have to wiggle it to get it to come loose). Then, you can't actually pry the door open with your hands, it just kind of flops open when you pull out the tray, which feels ungainly and incorrectly seated, somehow. But that's how it works. Then, you continue to pull the drip tray toward you and the ground container tries to come out, but gets stuck on one corner. You have to reach in, grab the grounds container and maneuver it out of the compartment. At this point, you've pulled out the drip tray (which has a floppy piece that has probably come loose at this point, more on that later), the door is open exposing the entire inner portion of the machine and all it's mechanical stuff, and then there's the very hard to get to grounds container.Assuming you can hold all this stuff in place or have the counter space for it all, you can go and dump the grounds and then just muscle everything back into place again. It's really, really inconvenient and ungainly. And if you have the milk container installed, you have to first remove that in order to access the door -- and that is a whole other issue as I will detail next.

- The milk frothing container is very flimsy and feels cheap.Mine hasn't broken yet, but I am absolutely convinced it won't make it through another two months, and here's why. It's made of a lot of plastic pieces that sort of don't really fit together well.It is rickety. All in all, it works pretty well at making hot and frothy milk (I stress pretty well, because it is kind of hit and miss as to whether it decides to behave each time -- mine isn't working at the moment which I will also address shortly). But it is really, really hard to push the container into its little valve connection on the front of the machine, and even harder to pull out, again. In fact, my wife refuses to install and uninstall because it takes so much muscle. She just can't do it.It should just slide easily in and out.Instead, you really have to push hard to wedge it into place, and unless your machine is up against a wall, it will be pushed right along with it.And when you pull the milk container out, you have to seriously jerk the container to get it to come out -- I'm not kidding here, it's rough. And the flimsy handle on this container is going to break off, I just know it.And I almost feel that this is by design so that I will have to buy a new one from DeLonghi at forty or fifty bucks, or whatever they charge.I know I'm being snarky, but why else would they stick such a crappy attachment onto such an outrageously expensive machine?Up sales, I think they call it in the business.Anyway, when you jerk the container out, if there is any amount of milk left in it, it is going to slurp out onto the floor. The top of the container is not sealed well. And many a mess has ensued. And lastly, this container three times out of ten does not register on the machine as being properly seated. And then you have to jerk it out and shove it back in sometimes three times before it beeps to say you have put it in properly. The funny thing is, there is only one way to put it in.So for the machine to say it is not installed properly is absolutely incorrect. It is aggravating, believe me.

- After only two months, the milk container (which has two settings, hot milk and hot frothed milk) only registers one of the settings.I can no longer make frothed milk, only hot milk. The microwave does this same task in a much easier fashion, so unless I can get the company to replace or fix it, I will probably just stop using the milk jug entirely -- which will make my wife happy. I imagine this is all due to the constant hard shoving in and out of the container.Frankly, I am surprised it lasted this long.Again, at this cost, I shouldn't be having problems after two months of use.

- Okay, enough about the friggin' milk jug.My biggest overall complaint with this machine is that it has all kinds of sensors on it (hard water detector, milk container detector, etc.), but it isn't smart enough to tell you when it is low on water, when the grounds container needs emptying or when it doesn't have enough beans. And this creates a most frustrating scenario. It seems that every other morning, I forget to check all three of those things (and remember, it is REALLY hard to get to the grounds container, so there is no way to check its fullness without a major surgical entry.)The machine will actually STOP right in the middle of preparing a cup of coffee to tell me to fill the water tank, empty the grounds, put more beans in or to descale the device. Are you kidding me? With all those sensors that are already there they couldn't figure a way for one of them to show you before you start brewing that there is a work stoppage impending? And then, after filling the beans or dumping the grounds or whatever, the machine doesn't even start the coffee where it left off.You have to throw away your half cup of whatever because it probably is not strong enough or properly brewed, yet.And then you have to start the whole process over. You just wasted coffee beans, water and, most importantly, time. This is beyond frustrating.

- As mentioned a moment ago, the descaling feature is really annoying. It pops up unexpectedly and won't let you do anything until the descaling is carried out.And you have to stay with the machine for the full thirty minutes that it descales because you have to fill and dump the water reservoir multiple times during the process.I walked away during the first descaling and the machine reset itself back to the very beginning of the process.I could not make a cup of coffee until I stood there for the full thirty minutes and let it go through its thing. And even more annoying, I only use distilled water, anyway. So, theoretically, I shouldn't have to descale at all, or not as often as it wants me to.In my busy world, this standing down to watch over a machine for thirty minutes completely discredits the "automatic" moniker.

- Who at DeLonghi decided that two and a half ounces of coffee fills a coffee cup? They have five brew size settings, none of which fills my standard American sized coffee cup.Come on, sell us a machine in the USA that fills a cup in the USA!Granted, you can make one custom setting, referred to as 'my coffee' which allows you to fill a proper cup.And I use this setting solely in my world. All of the other settings are completely useless.

- There is a so-called two cup setting (which barely fills two thimbles -- thimbles for six year old children, at that) and this procedure works fine UNLESS you want to use the milk jug in the drink preparation. You can't fit two cups and the milk container on the base at the same time, despite what the directions insinuate. So you can't actually prepare two cappuccinos or lattes. You can only make two thimbles of straight coffee with this configuration. Not a big deal for me.But beware. This really is a one cup at a time brewing device.

- The drip tray that your cup sits on is very close to the coffee dispenser nozzle. Therefore, you can only use smaller sized coffee cups with the machine.DeLonghi has built in a very oddly shaped and poorly configured "trap door" thingy that folds up with some difficulty and then allows another half inch of clearance for your cup. However, the width of the trap door is so minimal that any slightly taller cup that I have doesn't fit into this depression.Basically, you can put a really tall demitasse type cup into there, but nothing else.It is nearly a useless scenario. They should have made it bigger. Not to mention, the trap door falls off and clatters onto the floor constantly when moving the drip tray, cleaning, etc.It is a poorly...Read more›

This machine is AMAZING! I have never tasted smoother, richer coffee ever ... not even in coffee shops. It is so easy to use and within minutes you can have espresso, latte, cappuccino or americano coffee. I used to use a french press, have tried ordinary percolators and have used a pod machine, but this coffee maker gets 10 out of 5 stars ifI could rate it as such! You can make coffee from beans (the machine grinds as much as is required automatically) or you can add ground beans yourself. You can choose which strength of coffee you want as well as which volume. I will never go back to the other methods of coffee making! The only thing is ... we're all drinking way too much delicious coffee now!

Saeco 658 Odea Giro 15-Bar-Pump Automatic Espresso Machine

Seeking the perfect 'superautomatic' espresso machine, we bought this model a little over 2 years ago.Worked fine for a while. Coffee quality good, nice frothing. Then, after about year, it began to leak water from beneath. When this got to the point of flooding the counter, we sought service.Nearest Saeco-registered service center (and the only one in Missouri) was 100 miles away.Dropped it off, left the required $75 deposit. It took the service shop a NINE MONTHSto receive parts. And, it turns out, not all the parts were sent. Service bill: $200 (1/3 the cost of the machine)ON WARRANY. After another 200 mile round trip, it was back in the kitchen. It lasted 2 weeks, and completely stopped functioning. Among other things, the frothing stopped workingThat's all for this SAECO."Superautomatic" sounds too good to be true, and it is.

Advice:
1) don't buy SAECO machines
2) don't buy any machine lacking reviews after at least a year of use. Read a lot of reviews and you'll see that this kind of breakdown is very common among all brands of superautomatics.
3) get up early enough to make a cup of coffee yourself.

We're back to our totally reliable, unbreakable, Mukka Express.

Product Description:
Equipped with 15 bars of pump pressure, this 1500-watt automatic espresso machine makes it effortless to enjoy cafe-quality beverages from the comfort of home. It features an innovative control dial and large buttons for easily customizing the aroma and amount of coffee in the cup and for choosing between one or two cups simultaneously; alert lights to the left of the dial provide clear, instant details for each function. The appliance also provides a patented removable brew group that allows the machine to tamp, brew, and dispense coffee in one cycle (remove the brew group for quick rinsing and chemical-free cleaning). In addition, its built-in ceramic grinder ensures the best results without altering the flavor of coffee. The grinder delivers a more even grind for perfect dosing and blending, which means more control over the density and body of coffee--plus substantially reduces the amount of coffee residue in the cup. Even more, the espresso machine's Rapid Steam technology reduces the normal waiting time between brewing coffee and steam output to just a few seconds. A separate heat exchange for steam delivers fast and continuous steam pressure for creating a creamy milk froth in no time. The included Pannarello frothing device dispenses steam in three different directions and makes it simple to froth milk for cappuccinos and lattes or to dispense hot water for Americanos, tea, and hot chocolate. Additional highlights include a stainless-steel boiler, a 180-gram-capacity bean container, an OptiDose adjustable doser (7 to 10-1/2 grams), a removable 1-1/2-liter water tank, a Brita water filter, a large cup-stacking surface that can hold up to six espresso cups at a time, and an adjustable-height drip tray that can be raised or lowered to accommodate a wide range of cup sizes. For added convenience, the unit's Energy Safe mode kicks in when the machine sits idle (choose Stand-By mode for enhanced energy savings). Durably housed in ABS plastic with an ultra-sleek and stylish design, the espresso machine measures 15 by 11-1/2 by 14-1/2 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

Saeco SMK-06 Automatic Espresso Maker Maintenance Kit Review

Saeco SMK-06 Automatic Espresso Maker Maintenance Kit

needed (basically just) descaler but this kit came up as recommended on Amazon for our Saeco Odea Giro unit. the kit also includes the lubricant, a "paintbrush" to apply it to the brew group's hard-to-reach places, and a water filter (which we don't bother with; our drinking water is triple-filtered as it is). there's also a package of cleaning tabs which can't be used with the Odea Giro, unfortunately (as it doesn't have an automatic cleaning cycle).

next time around, i'll just buy the less expensive Urnex Dezcal descaling solution, which is evidently the OEM product that Saeco private labels in this kit.

I recently upgraded to this model from a Krups steam espresso maker and it was probably one of the best decisions I've ever made.I can't believe I did upgrade sooner.

The espresso comes out perfect, just like those at places like Starbucks. My favorite part about this model is the minimum work required for cleaning. It has a bin that collects the used grounds so you don't have to empty and clean after every cup.

The steam for the milk frother comes out super fast and super hot.It takes less than 30 seconds for me to froth milk. And when you're done, just rinse the plastic nozzle and you're set for the next cup.

Now the only downside about this model: it doesn't store too much water. If you have 2 or more people using this thing every morning, there's a good chance someone will always have to refill the water in the tank after the machine pumps out a half cup of coffee and blinks its red light.Even then, for the price, it is well worth it and provides great value.

Update 4/7/2010 - Still turning out great coffee/espresso with ease after 3 years of service.Must've saved me $1000 from morning trips to Starbucks annually.

Saeco 4038 Vienna Plus 15-Bar-Pump Super-Automatic Espresso Machine, Graphite Review

Saeco 4038 Vienna Plus 15-Bar-Pump Super-Automatic Espresso Machine, Graphite
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently purchased a Vienna Superautomatica as an inexpensive second espresso maker. The first thing I noticed is that it is Italian made like many of the great espresso machines. The body of the Vienna is "graphite" plastic, and while it does not feel first class, it somehow has a pretty sturdy feel to it. I also like that the footprint is pretty small thus taking up little counter space.

I opened the manual, which is not particularly clear, but need not be on account of very simple operation. The Vienna has three buttons--on/off, coffee, and steam. It also has a steamer control knob and a water volume knob.

I turned on the machine after filling the coffee and water tanks. The buttons feel Italian--you'll know what I mean if you've owned an Alfa Romeo. They are a bit clunky next to my old Capresso C1000, but they work well (for now).

The Vienna takes a couple of minutes to warm up--I don't mind this for reasons I'll reveal in a minute. The coffee spout is adjustable up and down to accommodate a large variety of cups and mugs. Once it's ready, the coffee light stops blinking. I push the button and it begins to grind the coffee. The noise level of the machine is louder than my Capresso, but not too bad. You might wake up the house with it in the morning, but my child stayed asleep. Once the coffee finishes the grind, the Vienna immediately begins making espresso.

My first impression was that I saw a lot more steam coming from the coffee than my Capresso. I am hopeful. The coffee also looked a bit thicker than the Capresso. After the Vienna finished I observed the cup: nice crema, plenty hot, and smells like the genuine article. I gave it a taste--wow, step aside Capresso, this espresso is richer, hotter, and a lot closer to coffee bar espresso. Next I took a sip. Ah yes, the cup holds rich chocolatey espresso. If you are sort of a coffee snob, you'll like what you taste. The coffee is much richer than the Capresso, which I attribute to hotter water and fuller extraction.

I'm sure that the Vienna will not make good enough espresso for some folks, but to me, it still tastes better than Starbucks. It was more than $100 cheaper than my Capresso and frankly makes better espresso. I cannot yet speak to the durability of the machine, but the Vienna is now my favorite inexpensive espresso maker.

DeLonghi ESAM3300 Magnifica Super-Automatic Espresso/Coffee Machine Review

DeLonghi ESAM3300 Magnifica Super-Automatic Espresso/Coffee Machine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have the EAM3200, which is the previous model version. The differences are slight but noticeable to the newer. These machines are the best in class for price and performance, produce a great espresso, and are maintainable in ways that other manufacturers models are not. The coffee from the Delonghi is just as good as from Jura and even some manual models such as Expobar and Rancillo. It is very close to what you find in Italy - not quite, but for the price it is worth it. Great crema, hot temperature, rich flavor. And the best part is you can pull out the brew mechanism and clean it - VERY key. This will ensure sound operation and function for many years.

In order to keep this machine is fine working order, you need to do a bit of upkeep each week and use the right beans.

1. Only use non-oily, 100% Arabica beans. If you use oily beans it will clog frequently and attract rancid flavors. It will also shorten the life of the machine. I use Illy, but any espresso will do (I actually get the Illy dark roast - it has more flavor when brewing a larger "americano" cup).
2. Clean the brew mechanism once a week. Just snap it out and run it under hot water.
3. Use spring water instead of tap water. This will keep any weird flavors from your tap entering the coffee. It may build up minerals, but...
4. De-calcify the machine when it asks for it - don't wait.

I, for one, would rather have manual controls over coffee amount, strength, etc. You are not losing out on anything by not having digital controls - other than not being able to have the machine automatically on and ready to go when you first wake up. As for the other models ability to do milk-based drinks at the touch of a button - how often do you really want a cappuccino? If it is every day, then get the 3500. If you are like me and need real coffee in the morning, then get this model. The milk canister can only sit in the fridge for so long. If you are planning to serve cappuccino at dinner parties, then you are committing Italian heresy - cappuccino is only served in the morning.

CONS
1. The cup warmer does not work very well, but get double walled cups and the temperature of the product will not be an issue.
2. You can't have it turn on automatically at a certain time. But it only takes a few minutes to get up to temperature.
3. It is NOISY.

My espresso settings - coffee amount at 10 o'clock, strength at 3 o'clock, single cup dispense. Super double espresso in an espresso cup. I may have 2 of these on a saturday.

My wife's "americano" settings - coffee amount at 3 o'clock, strength at 3 o'clock, double cup dispense. Full cup of rich coffee in a normal cup.

Bean grind at 5.
